I hear on the news today that there are delays and disputes taking place in the appointment of officials for the new Iraqi government because the Americans are trying to get their favoured candidates into these jobs.

It is entirely predictable that the Americans should be behaving in this way. It's very much in keeping with the way they behave all around the world.

It is also completely obvious that there cannot possibly be any hope of stability and democracy in Iraq if the government is seen to be made up of an American puppet regime.

It seems perfectly elementary and obvious that it would be sensible for the Americans to make certain that they are not perceived to be interfering with or attempting to dominate this process.

So their behaviour, in the sphere as in so many others, appears to be entirely at odds with their words.

Well?

Am I missing something?
